LA County Resumes Delivery of Imported Water after Pausing to Address Invasive Mussel

LOS ANGELES COUNTY (March 24, 2026) — Los Angeles County Public Works today announced the resumption of State Water Project water deliveries into the County’s flood control system following a precautionary pause implemented in 2025 to protect critical stormwater infrastructure. The agency officially lifted its prohibition to allow for the gradual reintroduction of imported water to support groundwater recharge operations in the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys.

“Ensuring a safe, clean and reliable water supply remains our top priority in managing the region’s water infrastructure,” said Mark Pestrella, P.E., director of LA County Public Works. “Through strong regional collaboration and a science-based approach, we are able to safely resume deliveries while continuing to guard against invasive species risks.”

The temporary pause was enacted after the detection of invasive golden mussels in upstream State Water Project reservoirs. In response, LA County Public Works worked in close coordination with regional water partners to develop treatment, monitoring, and mitigation strategies designed to safeguard local water systems while maintaining operational readiness.

LA County Public Works emphasized that the earlier pause was precautionary and did not affect water availability for firefighting or emergency response. Local reservoirs, groundwater supplies, and municipal systems remain robust, supported by above-average stormwater capture in recent years and groundwater basin levels at near 20-year highs.

The County continues to collaborate with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the Main San Gabriel Basin Watermaster, and local water agencies to ensure a coordinated, resilient water supply strategy for the region.

The resumption of imported water deliveries reflects a balanced approach—protecting environmental and infrastructure integrity while advancing water supply reliability for communities across Los Angeles County.
