LA County Rent Relief Program Disbursed More Than $81 Million to Landlords
Video Series Highlights Program’s Human Impact
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (DCBA), announced the formal close of the LA County Rent Relief Program. The initiative, which opened December 12, 2023, and concluded June 4, 2024, successfully distributed more than $81 million in direct financial assistance to landlords across the County, helping protect housing stability for thousands of tenants and mitigating the long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through two rounds of applications, the Program provided grants of up to $30,000 per rental unit, for past due rent and eligible expenses dating back to April 1, 2022. In total, 1,824 landlords received critical relief, with awards prioritized for those serving vulnerable tenants, owning no more than four properties, or managing units in areas of highest need as identified by the LA County Equity Explorer Tool.
“The Rent Relief Program played a vital role in Los Angeles County’s pandemic recovery, helping small property owners while allowing tenants to remain housed,” said Rafael Carbajal, Director of DCBA. “This program is a testament to what we can achieve through targeted public investment and meaningful community partnerships.”
This program was possible through a collaboration with The Center by Lendistry, which administered the program on behalf of the County. Their experience in deploying relief funding ensured that landlords received support quickly and fairly. “We are proud of the outcomes this program achieved, especially for the landlords and tenants most at risk,” said Tunua Thrash-Ntuk, President & CEO of The Center by Lendistry. “Behind every grant was a family trying to stay housed, a small property owner trying to keep their building afloat, and a community working to recover. As we close this chapter, we’re honored to uplift the stories of those impacted.”
DCBA is debuting a collection of video testimonials featuring landlords and tenants who benefited from the grants to mark the end of the program. Their personal stories illustrate the real-world impact of the Rent Relief Program and underscore the value of public investments.
