Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Passes Motion Recognizing November 11, 2024, as Veteran’s Day in Los Angeles County

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (MVA) is proud to announce the recognition of November 11, 2024, as Veteran’s Day in Los Angeles County. The motion, introduced by Supervisor Horvath and Supervisor Barger, was approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors (BOS) to express gratitude and support to our nation’s veterans and current service members.

Originally called Armistice Day, this important day traces back to the end of World War I and was dedicated to honoring those who served in the “Great War.” In 1954, Congress renamed it Veteran’s Day to celebrate and honor all U.S veterans, both living and deceased.

To honor and recognize the invaluable contributions of our veterans, Los Angeles County will participate in Operation Green Light in partnership with the National Association of Counties (NACO) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO). From November 4, 2024, through November 11, 2024, County civic buildings and spaces will be illuminated in green to symbolize support for veterans. Bob Hope Patriotic Hall, the Gloria Molina Grand Park fountain, and other County facilities will shine green to honor veterans.

Los Angeles County is home to approximately 232,000 veterans, making up 15.5% of all veterans in California. MVA actively advocates on behalf of these veterans and their families. Through programs like the Veteran Peer Access Network (VPAN), MVA provides veterans and service members help navigating benefits assistance, legal services, housing, mental health, addiction treatment, education, and employment.

The County and MVA encourages all County residents, cities, businesses, and partners to join us in Operation Green Light, showing support by lighting their spaces green and participating in services, programs, and ceremonies honoring veterans.
