LA General Achieves Magnet Nursing Recognition, Joining the Nations Top Hospitals for Excellence

Los Angeles, CA — Los Angeles General Medical Center (LA General) has earned the prestigious Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), joining an elite group of fewer than 10 percent of hospitals nationwide recognized for nursing excellence.

Located in the heart of East Los Angeles, LA General now stands among the nation’s top hospitals for delivering superior patient outcomes, empowering nursing leadership, and fostering a culture of safety, equity, and innovation.

“Magnet designation affirms what we have always known—that LA General nurses are among the most dedicated, skilled, and compassionate professionals in the country,” said Nancy Blake, Chief Nursing Officer at LA General Medical Center. “This honor reflects our deep commitment to our patients, our people, and our mission to provide Exceptional Care, Healthy Communities.”

Magnet recognition is widely regarded as the gold standard in nursing and organizational excellence. The designation follows a rigorous multi-year evaluation of five core components: transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, new knowledge and innovation, and strong empirical outcomes.

“Earning Magnet recognition is a defining achievement that underscores LA General’s unwavering commitment to delivering equitable, world-class care to our community,” said Jorge Orozco, Chief Executive Officer of LA General. “This honor celebrates the passion, resilience, and expertise of every member of our team who shows up every day determined to make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families.”

“Magnet is more than a badge of honor—it’s a promise to our community that they will receive world-class care from highly skilled, deeply compassionate professionals,” added Dr. Christina Ghaly, Director of the County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services. “This recognition reflects the strength of LA General’s values and the power of investing in frontline caregivers.”

Throughout its Magnet journey, LA General expanded shared governance councils, strengthened nursing education pathways, and prioritized data-driven quality improvement efforts—all while caring for more than 150,000 patients each year, many from historically under-resourced communities.

“As a bedside nurse, I feel incredibly proud to work in a hospital that truly listens to us, supports our growth, and empowers us to lead,” said Jonathan Rivera, RN, Magnet Champion at LA General. “This recognition isn’t just about nursing—it’s about raising the standard of care for our entire community.” said Tiffinay Gin, RN, Magnet Champion.

The Magnet designation will help LA General continue to recruit top nursing talent, retain experienced staff, and accelerate its leadership in public health transformation across the County of Los Angeles. The achievement aligns with the hospital’s mission to provide Exceptional Care, Healthy Communities, and underscores its role as a national model for safety-net innovation.
