Justice, Care and Opportunities Department to Launch All-Female Cohort of Firefighter Training Program

The much-anticipated, all-female cohort of the JCOD Firefighter Training Program at the Los Angeles County Training Center (LACTC) will kick off this month.

The first cadets have already begun moving into the training site. Between 15 to 20 women are expected to participate in Cohort 2 of the Firefighter Training Program. In addition to training that can lead to certifications in wildland and structural firefighting, participants will also receive essential life skills training, a stipend, free housing and meals.

Cohort 1 of the Firefighter Training Program graduated last fall. Over half of those graduates have already received job offers and started working for Cal Fire.

“We’re excited to launch the very first all-female cohort of JCOD’s Firefighter Training Program, which will give these women a path to fulfilling, family-sustaining careers in fire service and make them role models in their communities,” said Judge Songhai Armstead (ret.), Director of JCOD.

A Second Chance Month celebration and open house will be held at LACTC on April 28th.

JCOD provides opportunities to justice-impacted individuals and continues to help bolster LA County’s fire defenses. For admittance to future cohorts, priority is given to individuals who have been impacted by the justice and foster care systems, as well as veterans.
