JCOD to Lead Social Justice Conversation at SXSW 2025
LOS ANGELES – The Justice, Care and Opportunities Department (JCOD) will spearhead a critical discussion on social justice and systemic transformation at the 2025 South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festivals, showcasing the groundbreaking work being done in Los Angeles County to support justice-impacted individuals.
JCOD Director, Judge Songhai Armstead (Ret.), will moderate a compelling panel titled Community Champions: Driving Social Justice Forward, featuring influential changemakers who are actively reshaping their communities. Prophet Walker, CEO of Treehouse—a company focused on building community-centered housing solutions—and Doug Bond, President and CEO of Amity Foundation, an organization dedicated to transformative rehabilitation and reentry programs, will join the discussion.
“Our work is about breaking cycles and creating real opportunities for individuals to heal and thrive,” said Judge Armstead. “At SXSW, we have the chance to amplify these efforts, spark new ideas from the great work being done in Los Angeles County, and inspire a broader movement toward a fairer, more just society.”
This panel will not only highlight the personal and collective impact of these leaders but will also showcase JCOD’s innovative programs designed to break cycles of incarceration, foster healing, and create real opportunities for those impacted by the justice system.
“Artists and creators have always been a powerful voice for change, capable of inspiring people to see complex social challenges with a fresh perspective,” said Bond. “SXSW has long been a space where creativity and advocacy intersect, making it the perfect place to highlight how creatives can join with local government, advocates, and community-based organizations to ensure justice-impacted people have a real shot at recovery. Amity is thrilled at the chance to share our work with such a vibrant community.”
“Community Champions: Driving Social Justice Forward” will take place on Monday, March 10, at 10 a.m. as part of the Government and Civic Engagement Track at SXSW. SXSW attendees are encouraged to join this crucial discussion and explore strategies for fostering systemic change.
“True community transformation happens when we move beyond temporary solutions and build lasting systems of care, housing, and opportunity. By mobilizing resources effectively, partnering with local nonprofits, and advocating for policies that center dignity and inclusion, we can create spaces that don’t just shelter—but heal, uplift, and empower. Being able to convene at SXSW allows us to convene together in order to share strategies, learn from each other, and inspire a movement toward more just and resilient communities,” added Walker.
