New Earthquake Fault Zones Mapped for the Antelope ValleyÂ
ANTELOPE VALLEY, Calif.–The California Geological Survey (CGS) announced the release of Preliminary Review Maps detailing proposed new and revised Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zones for Los Angeles County. These maps, released for public review and comment, are required by the Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zoning Act which followed the 1971 San Fernando Earthquake. The purpose of the maps is to reduce earthquake risks by highlighting areas that are prone to surface fault ruptures.
What does it mean if a property is in an Earthquake Fault Zone? It means there is an active fault nearby that poses a potential risk of surface rupture. Property ownersplanning to sell real property must disclosure this information, and any new construction may require a fault study to ensure structural safety.
Earthquake Fault Zones encompass surface traces of active faults that pose potential risks to existing and future structures. The proposed zones are outlined with approximately a 500-foot buffer on either side of these fault traces.Â
