Launch of POC Data Dashboard Featuring Juvenile Detention Data

POC Dashboard

Los Angeles, CA – The Probation Oversight Commission (POC) is pleased to announce the launch of the POC Data Dashboard, a new digital platform providing transparent access to juvenile detention data in Los Angeles County. This initiative is part of a collaborative effort with the Los Angeles County Probation Department, established under a data-sharing memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in October 2022.

About the POC Data Dashboard

The POC Data Dashboard debuts with data from 2022 onwards and features critical insights into juvenile detention patterns, including:

  • Deployments of Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray by Probation Officers.

  • Demographics (age, gender, ethnicity) of pre- and post-adjudicated youth.

  • A breakdown of youth in juvenile halls by case status.

  • Details on youth dispositioned to the Secure Youth Treatment Facility (SYTF).

The dashboard is designed to foster transparency, inform public accountability, and facilitate the monitoring of systemic reforms within the juvenile justice system.

Commitment to Data Transparency and Public Trust

The creation of the POC Data Dashboard is a key step towards enhancing the understanding of who the incarcerated youth are, their backgrounds, and the systemic conditions they navigate. This effort aims to empower decision-makers and the public with accurate data to assess trends, make informed decisions, and build trust in our juvenile justice system.

Challenges and Ongoing Collaboration

While the Probation Department has faced challenges in data collection due to outdated systems, the POC remains committed to improving these processes. The data provided, though currently incomplete, has been shared without alterations to maintain transparency.

The POC appreciates the data provided thus far, including general population statistics and detailed reports on OC spray use. We acknowledge the efforts of the Probation Department and encourage them to continue embracing robust data practices. Increased collaboration and compliance with the MOU will further enhance our collective ability to foster systemic improvements.

Looking Forward

As we move forward, the POC will continue to advocate for comprehensive data reporting and sharing as integral elements of the Probation Department’s culture. We believe that through enhanced transparency and accountability, we can better serve the youth and communities of Los Angeles County.
