LOS ANGELES—Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell was joined by a host of local officials, community members, and health care workers to mark the start of construction of a new nine-story hospital building on the campus of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

“I’m thrilled to see the community and our County departments working together to embark on this massive project that will provide state-of-the-art health care and medical facilities to more than three million Angelenos,” said Supervisor Mitchell. “This $1.7 billion project advances the County’s commitment to remedy inequitable access to healthcare and provides a local economic engine, creating hundreds of jobs for residents that live in the surrounding neighborhood.”

The Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Replacement Program is a $1.7 billion investment that will improve access and equity to underserved communities and expand healthcare capabilities at the only Level I Trauma Center in south LA County. The project is the largest capital improvement program delivered by the County, consisting of six new buildings, including the replacement of the existing hospital building made famous in the popular 1970s television series, Emergency!

Other campus improvements at various stages of construction include a nine-story hospital building with 347 patient beds, a six-story clinic that will consolidate existing outpatient care with teaching facilities, a seven-story above-ground parking structure that added 1,500 parking spaces, a new regional laboratory and two additional support buildings.

With a service area of over three million people, the re-envisioned 72-acre campus will be a center of excellence in healthcare delivery, urban health promotion and prevention, workforce development, academic research and teaching, and economic development. The medical center will remain open during construction, which is expected to be completed in 2027.
