Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office Stands in Solidarity with Alameda County Public Defender’s Office

In opposition to increased law enforcement and prosecutorial presence provided by the State

The Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office stands united with the Alameda County Public Defender’s Office and Chief Public Defender Brendon Woods in opposition to deploying state lawyers and National Guard personnel for prosecuting local cases. Governor Newsom and State Attorney General Bonta’s proposed solution threatens to worsen the deep-seated issues of mass incarceration and systemic injustices that plague our communities, particularly those of Black and Brown individuals.

“Our communities need comprehensive solutions like affordable housing, investment in community-based organizations, access to quality healthcare and mental health support, all of which would work to address the root causes of crime,” said Los Angeles County Public Defender Ricardo D. García. “It is deeply concerning that Governor Newsom and Attorney General Bonta have opted to funnel resources into prosecution rather than investing in programs aimed at prevention and rehabilitation.”

The Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office echoes the assertion that increased prosecution not only fails to address the underlying causes of crime but also perpetuates cycles of poverty and recidivism. The decision to allocate additional prosecutorial resources without corresponding funding for public defense underscores a fundamental imbalance in the criminal legal system. Our office is deeply committed to advocating for fairness, equity, and justice within the criminal legal system, and we firmly oppose any measures that deepen the systemic inequities marginalized communities face.

“I urge policymakers to heed the voices of impacted communities and pursue holistic, evidence-based approaches to public safety,” said García. “I echo Mr. Woods’ call to move away from the failed policies of the past and a commitment to implementing innovative solutions that prioritize human dignity and community well-being.”
