Jingle Jam in South LA Spreads Joy with Toys and Health Checks

Martin Luther King, Jr. Outpatient Center Hosted Holiday Toy Giveaway and Wellness Fair for Community Members

Today the Martin Luther King, Jr. Outpatient Center (MLK OPC) hosted its Jingle Jam Wellness Fair and Toy Giveaway. The festive half-day event, held at the MLK OPC facility, aimed to provide health resources and holiday cheer to residents of South L.A. and surrounding neighborhoods. Attendees took full advantage of the wide array of free medical screenings and educational resources offered.

A team of nurses, doctors, dentists, and other medical professionals provided pediatric checks, HIV tests, cervical and breast cancer screenings as well as CPR training. Dental exams and general health education were also popular stations. Those in attendance were able to receive free COVID-19 tests, pill box organizers, and other wellness supplies. Local barbers volunteered their time to cut and braid hair. Over 100 children were able to receive a toy as a holiday gift. Children also enjoyed story time, gardening classes, yoga, and face painting.

“We are thrilled to see so many families from our community come out to celebrate the holidays and prioritize their wellness,” said Dr. Tasha Dixon Senior Physician, Family Medicine. “Events like our Jingle Jam allow us to extend our mission of caring for the whole person – mind, body, and spirit. It was heartwarming to spread some joy during this special time of year. We encourage everyone to visit us for preventative care even when they don’t feel sick.”

The MLK Outpatient Center is housed in the same medical campus as the Martin Luther King, Jr. hospital, but they are different facilities. The MLK Outpatient Center provides health services such as family medicine, pediatric care, adult primary care, urgent care, and behavioral health support.

Maribel Rosas, Supervising Staff Nurse at MLK Outpatient Center who conducted health screenings at the event, added, “The Jingle Jam is truly a team effort that deepens our relationships with patients and highlights our role as a community resource. We want our community to know we are here for them. We want them to be healthy and happy.”
