Los Angeles General Medical Center (LA General) proudly announces the recognition of Dr. Eric Hsieh, Program Director of Internal Medicine, with the esteemed Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award. This prestigious award honors Dr. Hsieh’s exceptional contributions to graduate medical education, innovative leadership, and unwavering commitment to advancing the field of medicine. 

The Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award serves as a testament to Dr. Hsieh’s exemplary dedication as a model physician educator. Colleagues and peers have nominated him in acknowledgment of his transformative leadership, which has significantly impacted the lives of trainees, patients, and the broader medical community. 

During his tenure as the Program Director, Dr. Hsieh has navigated the evolving landscape of medical education with remarkable resilience. He prioritized stability in the educational experiences of trainees, fostering a sense of community within the program through inclusivity, cooperation, and collaboration. Dr. Hsieh constantly advocates for the trainees, patients, and educational objectives of the program, leading numerous Special Reviews of underperforming programs within our institution. His expertise in this arena has assisted in the implementation of Graduate Medical Education (GME) best practices and new approaches not only within the Internal Medicine specialty but also across LA General. 

Under Dr. Hsieh’s guidance, the Internal Medicine program at LA General has undergone transformative changes. He has enhanced the training footprint, providing more clinical and research opportunities for residents. His initiatives have empowered residents to engage in crucial discussions with hospital administrators, leading to substantial changes in hospital policies and practices. Dr. Hsieh’s educational innovations, including small group talks, simulations, community-building activities, and specialized lecture series, have catered to the diverse learning needs of each trainee. Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in the creation of an ultrasound training program, ensuring safer bedside procedures and diagnostics for residents.

His commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment and his advocacy for both our trainees and patients are truly commendable. This award is a well-deserved recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of medicine.” 

The award will be presented to Dr. Hsieh at the ACGME’s Annual Education Conference on March 8, 2024.
