LOS ANGELES COUNTY CLAIMS BOARD

The County of Los Angeles Claims Board reviews and approves settlements of claims and lawsuits for money damages. The Claims Board is comprised of a representative of the Auditor’s Office, Chief Executive Office and County Counsel’s Office. The Board meets the first and third Monday of the month, generally at 9:30 a.m., in Room 648 at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration in Los Angeles. The agendas for the meetings are posted no later than 72 hours in advance of the meetings. Discussions with legal counsel concerning the proposed settlements occur in closed session. Actions taken and the votes of the members present are publicly reported as provided in the Brown Act.

Except as noted, the Claims Board approves settlements above $20,000, up to and including $100,000. The Claims Board also reviews proposed settlements over $100,000 and refers such settlements, with a recommendation, to the Board of Supervisors for final action. Only medical liability settlements exceeding $100,000 come before the Claims Board. The Claims Board reviews the proposed medical liability settlements and refers such settlements, with a recommendation, to the Board of Supervisors for final action. The Claims Board’s settlement recommendations generally appear on the Board of Supervisors’ agenda two weeks after the Claims Board has acted.

The County of Los Angeles Contract Cities Liability Trust Fund Claims Board reviews and approves the settlement of claims and lawsuits for money damages which are paid from the County’s Contract Cities Liability Trust Fund. The Board consists of eleven members nominated by the California Contract Cities Association and appointed by the Board of Supervisors. The eleven members consist of five city managers, five city council members and the executive director of the California Contract Cities Association. Currently the Claims Board consists of city council members Curtis Morris, James Bozajian, Margaret Finlay, Mark Waronek, and Patrick Kearney; city manager members Mark R. Alexander, Doug Prichard, Ernie Hernandez, Kenneth Striplin, and Jose Pulido; and Marcel Rodarte of the California Contract Cities Association.

The Board meets the second Wednesday of the month at 11 a.m. in the City of Monterey Park, Posada Ballroom at Luminarias Restaurant, 3500 Ramona Blvd., Monterey Park, CA 91754. The agendas for the meetings are posted no later than 72 hours in advance of the meetings. Discussions with legal counsel concerning the proposed settlements occur in closed session. Actions taken and the votes of the members present are publicly reported as provided in the Brown Act.
