Extreme Heat

DOWNEY, CA.—The Los Angeles County Probation Department, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE), proudly celebrated the achievements of young scholars during the annual Operation Graduation ceremony, recognizing students who earned their high school diplomas while participating in educational programs within Los Angeles County’s juvenile justice system.

Held at the historic Downey Theatre, the ceremony honored 27 graduates from Camps Afflerbaugh, Rockey, Kilpatrick, and Dorothy Kirby Center who were surrounded by family members, educators, mentors, probation staff, and community supporters. The graduates were recognized for reaching a milestone that reflects resilience, determination, and a commitment to building a brighter future. The celebration highlighted the transformative power of education and the importance of providing young people with opportunities to succeed, regardless of the challenges they have faced.

“Today is about much more than earning a diploma,” said Chief Probation Officer Guillermo Viera Rosa. “It is about recognizing the hard work, perseverance, and growth that each of these young people has demonstrated. Education opens doors, creates opportunities, and empowers individuals to redefine their future. We are incredibly proud of these graduates and grateful to the educators, families, mentors, and staff who helped make this achievement possible. Their success is a reminder that with support, opportunity, and determination, anything is possible.”

Probation Deputy Director Roman delivered remarks encouraging graduates to continue pursuing their goals and embrace the opportunities ahead. Probation Senior Director Corral also presented college scholarships to two graduates in recognition of their academic excellence and future aspirations.

Throughout the day, graduates and their guests enjoyed a celebratory experience that included refreshments, lunch, and time together following the ceremony. The event provided youth with the opportunity to share this significant accomplishment with the parents, family members, and supportive adults who have played an important role in their educational and personal journeys.

“I’m the first person in my family to graduate,” shared one graduate. “I’m excited for them to see me walk across the stage in my cap and gown and receive my diploma.”

This year, more than sixty students from juvenile halls, probation camps, and county community schools participated in Operation Graduation, demonstrating the resilience, perseverance, and determination that define the Class of 2026.

Operation Graduation is an annual commencement ceremony organized by LACOE in partnership with the Los Angeles County Probation Department. It is one of many partnerships Probation has to offer youth access to meaningful education and rehabilitation programming.
