LA General Medical Center Leader Dr. Allison Luu Named a Top National Patient Safety Expert by Becker’s Hospital Review

Los Angeles, CA — We are proud to recognize Dr. Allison Luu, Patient Safety Officer and Assistant Chief Quality Officer at LA General Medical Center, for being nationally recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of the nation’s leading patient safety experts.

At one of the largest and busiest public safety-net hospitals in the United States, Dr. Luu leads institution-wide patient safety and quality initiatives focused on improving outcomes, strengthening safety culture, and advancing operational excellence across multidisciplinary clinical teams.

Dr. Luu oversees the Quality Academy Program, the Quality, Risk and Safety Committee, TeamSTEPPS training, and the management of publicly reported quality metrics. She also leads the Health System Leader Fellowship and Healthcare Administration Scholars Program, helping develop the next generation of physician leaders in quality improvement, patient safety, and systems thinking.

Under her leadership, LA General achieved three consecutive Leapfrog “A” Hospital Safety Grades, while reducing central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) by 65% and catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) by 56% over a multi-year period. These accomplishments were achieved while caring for some of the region’s most medically and socially complex patients in a high-volume, resource-constrained public hospital environment.

As one of the nation’s premier safety-net hospitals and busiest Level I Trauma Centers, LA General cares for patients with highly complex medical, trauma, behavioral health, social, and socioeconomic needs — making sustained improvements in patient safety and quality especially significant.

In addition to her leadership at LA General, Dr. Luu serves as Assistant Professor and Quality and Safety Senior Seminar Director at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, where she continues advancing education, mentorship, and innovation in healthcare quality and patient safety.

Dr. Luu’s recognition reflects LA General Medical Center’s continued commitment to delivering world-class care, advancing patient safety, and leading quality improvement efforts that strengthen care for the communities we serve.
