LA General CMO Brad Spellberg Named to National List of Leading Health System Physician Executives

Los Angeles, CA — LA General Medical Center announced today that Chief Medical Officer Brad Spellberg, MD, has been named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s “252 Hospital and Health System Chief Medical Officers to Know | 2026” list, a national recognition highlighting physician executives who are advancing quality, safety, and clinical performance across the United States.

Dr. Spellberg serves as Chief Medical Officer at LA General Medical Center, one of the nation’s largest academic safety-net hospitals, caring for one of the most medically and socially complex patient populations in the country. Under his leadership, LA General has strengthened clinical governance and accountability while achieving substantial improvements in patient safety, mortality performance, length-of-stay management, and clinical acuity — all while managing rising patient volume within a high-acuity public health system that delivers care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

As a Level I Trauma Center and major academic training site, LA General delivers advanced specialty care, emergency medicine, complex surgical services, and treatment for high-risk populations. Dr. Spellberg directly oversees 19 chief physicians responsible for more than 1,500 credentialed physicians, as well as the Departments of Pharmacy, Social Services, Utilization Review, Risk Management, the Medical Staff Office, and the designated institutional official who oversees more than 1,000 residents and fellows.

“Driving meaningful quality improvement in a large public academic hospital serving high-acuity patients requires strong clinical governance, accountability, and teamwork,” said Jorge Orozco, CEO of LA General Medical Center. “This recognition reflects Dr. Spellberg’s leadership and the extraordinary commitment of our physicians, nurses, residents, and care teams who work every day to deliver exceptional care to our communities.”

During a significant workforce transition, Dr. Spellberg oversaw the recruitment of more than 270 physicians and allied health professionals and restructured physician leadership roles to strengthen accountability, regulatory compliance, and performance infrastructure across the organization. His leadership has helped reinforce a culture of clinical excellence while advancing LA General’s mission to deliver high-quality care to every patient served, regardless of complexity or circumstance.

He has also led enterprise innovations including the development of Safer@Home, LA General’s hospital-at-home model; the launch of the nation’s first transitional hemodialysis unit; comprehensive infection reduction initiatives; and executive coordination of the hospital’s COVID-19 response.

“I am honored by this recognition, which reflects the dedication of our physicians, nurses, residents, and staff who work every day to strengthen patient safety and improve outcomes for the communities we serve,” said Dr. Spellberg. “Advancing high-quality care in a complex public health environment requires teamwork, accountability, and a shared commitment to our mission of providing world-class care and education for all.”

Becker’s annual list highlights chief medical officers nationwide who are leading clinical strategy, physician engagement, regulatory excellence, and measurable performance improvement within their health systems.
