Public Urged to get Storm Ready During Flood Preparedness Week
LOS ANGELES—October 18-25 is Flood Preparedness Week across California, marking a critical time for Los Angeles County residents to raise their awareness of flood risk near their homes and workplaces in advance of upcoming winter storms.
Floods and storms are the nation’s most common and costly natural disasters. According to the National Weather Service, 99 deaths occur each year across the United States because of flooding.
“Flood Preparedness Week reminds us that planning ahead saves lives,” said Mark Pestrella, PE, Director of Los Angeles County Public Works. “Flooding can occur anywhere in LA County, so it’s important for residents to know their individual flood risk, prepare and practice response plans, and consider buying flood insurance before the storms arrive.”
Storm season officially starts on Oct. 15 in Los Angeles County. LA County Public Works maintenance crews have prepared the County’s flood control channels, reservoirs and debris basins to protect the public from the threat of mud and debris flows—especially in recent burn areas. Here are a few tips and resources to protect yourself and your family in advance of winter storms:
Key Flood Preparedness Tips:
- Know Your Risk: Visit waterforla.lacounty.gov/flood-preparedness to learn about local flood risk, evacuation routes, and safety tips.
- Be Prepared: Create an emergency kit, develop a family communication plan, and safeguard important documents. Find preparedness resources and sign up for emergency alerts through ready.lacounty.gov.
- Stay Informed: Tune into local news outlets and follow trusted sources like the National Weather Service on X and other social media platforms.
- Consider Flood Insurance: Homeowners’ insurance typically does not cover flood damage, so consider purchasing flood insurance to protect your property.
LA County Public Works will share tips and resources to help residents prepare for winter storms during Flood Preparedness Week and throughout storm season, Oct. 15-Apr. 15. Join the conversation and share your preparedness efforts on social media using the hashtag #LARAIN.
