LA County Parks Working to Replace Bonelli Park Transformer
Park Remains Temporarily Closed for Public Safety
SAN DIMAS, Calif. (June 7, 2025) – To replace the transformer that failed May 5 at Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park (Bonelli Park), the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation (LA County Parks) has expedited all required permits and is on track to reopen in approximately four weeks.
Bonelli Park has been temporarily closed because the park is without electricity and the transformer must be replaced. LA County Parks is working with a private sector, certified contractor on this project.
Unfortunately, a recent significant copper wire theft added a one-week delay and extra $100,000 in expenses. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigated and made an arrest. Increased security measures have also been implemented at Bonelli Park, and LA County Parks reminds the public that currently no visitors or cars are allowed.
The park remains temporarily closed for the public’s health and safety because most of the park lacks electricity, and there’s no drinking water and no working bathrooms.
Shortly after the power outage, LA County Parks established temporary power utilizing generators at the Bonelli Bluffs RV Park office, the LA County Sheriff’s Department park substation, and Bonelli Park headquarters. On May 9, all Bonelli Bluffs RV Park residents had power restored.
While Bonelli Park is closed, the following activities and services aren’t available:
- Events & picnics
- Permits & reservations
- Boating & lake operations
LA County Parks thanks the public for its patience, and please check LA County Parks Instagram @LACountyParks and at Facebook parks.lacounty.gov for weekly updates.
