West Nile Virus Infection Reported
- The Los Angeles County health officer has confirmed the first symptomatic human case of West Nile Virus infection in Los Angeles County for the 2010 season. The case is a teenager from the east Los Angeles County area who became symptomatic in mid-August.

- To provide greater transparency to the operations of County government, the Board of Supervisors has directed that the names and salaries of County department heads be posted online. The listing will be regularly updated. Salaries of supervisors and the three elected department heads -- assessor, district attorney and sheriff -- have long been accessible online.

County Libraries Begin New Service Hours
- As of July 26, the County Public Library changed service hours at 45 of its 89 libraries. The change was made due to decreased revenues. Information about the locations impacted is available at http://colapublib.org.

Unincorporated Areas

More than 65 percent of the County is unincorporated and approximately 1 million people live in these areas. The Board of Supervisors acts as the "city council" and County departments provide the municipal services.
