FAREWELL TO L.A. COUNTY'S CAO DAVID JANSSEN

L.A. County recently bid a fond farewell to Chief Administrative Officer David Janssen, who retired after over ten years of dedicated service. Without question, L.A. County is a better place because of his leadership. By helping bring us to a state of fiscal solvency and by improving interdepartmental communication and effectiveness, David's influence will be felt for generations to come.

The Board of Supervisors wished to express our gratitude to David in a way that could be enjoyed publicly and that would last permanently, so we officially dedicated the Music Center Plaza fountain in his honor. This action was especially fitting since David held such a steadfast commitment to the arts and the iconic fountain is situated in the heart of the Los Angeles Civic Center. It is a testament to his abilities that over 800 people attended his retirement dinner,

during which the legendary Frank Gehry -- who designed the Walt Disney Concert Hall -- presented David with a sculpture Gehry himself made.

To express my personal gratitude to David, I created a quilt especially for him. It featured myriad L.A. County images our public hospitals, museums, parks, and public safety personnel, to name just a few. I wanted to demonstrate how David's work touched so many aspects of the county and how he personified our mission statement: "Enriching Lives." David's wife Jeannie even supplied me with his old dress shirts and ties which I used for the quilt's backdrop. One features a black ink stain a perfect symbol of how David kept our budget "in the black."

JOIN US FOR EAST L.A. COUNTY HALL CELEBRATION!

Come join us on Wed., Jan. 31st at 11 a.m. to dedicate East L.A.'s own "city hall," located at 4801 E. Third St. (adjacent to the East L.A. Library and the newly refurbished Belvedere Park). East L.A. has long awaited its own full-service civic facility and we'll be commemorating its arrival with a special hometown celebration. Guests will enjoy an all-day open house, local entertainment, an exhibit of East L.A.'s municipal history, and all kinds of food.

Former Rep. Esteban Torres -- who represented this area for many years -- and other dignitaries will join us along with the Garfield High School Marching Band. We are very proud of the East L.A. County Hall, which provides residents with a central location to easily access county services. It's just the latest milestone in the East L.A. Civic Center project. This summer we will open a new Transit Center and, by 2009, we'll begin operating the Gold Line Eastside Extension. The East L.A. Civic Center will function as the final stop on this much anticipated light rail line.

L.A. COUNTY TAXPAYERS OFFICIALLY OWN DISNEY HALL

Since the Walt Disney Concert Hall opened to the public in October 2003, this majestic building has added a unique curvature to the downtown L.A. skyline. But only recently did the official title transfer take place -- meaning that now, L.A. County taxpayers officially own this stately, $274 million structure. It was initiated in 1987 with a generous $50 million gift from Lillian Disney (widow of the famous Walt Disney) and funded by private donations from corporations and foundations.

Designed by the renowned Frank Gehry, Disney Hall boasts a striking steel exterior of swirling forms that envelop an auditorium with acoustics that are considered by many to be among the finest in the world. It is the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, who have performed there since it opened. With the official Disney Hall title transfer complete, this elegant edifice embodies L.A. County's commitment to the arts and culture as well as our sincerity in meeting our financial obligations to taxpayers.

LARIO BIKE TRAIL REST STOP SIGNS RENOVATED

New sitting areas, signs, upgraded restrooms, and bike amenities have been installed along the Lario Bike Trail Rest Stop near the San Gabriel River Bike Trail, which is nestled in the foothills of Azusa and Irwindale. This bike path has special significance for me. As a young girl growing up in nearby Pico Rivera, I remember riding my bicycle along the San Gabriel River and Rio Hondo with the hope of reaching the ocean only to find a chain-link fence blocking my way not far down the path. It gives us great joy to know that more cyclists enjoy this bike path each day.
